How to Kill Termites Effectively

When it comes to termites on your property, prevention is always better than cure. It takes time and effort to get rid of an established infestation and you may need a pest control expert who is well-versed in termite extermination to help you. However, if you have figured out that termites are living in great numbers in and around your property, then you will want to start reducing their population before they can start to do some serious damage. What are some of the best termite extermination measures you can take?
Destroy Subterranean Nests
To begin with, subterranean termites might live underground but they will often favour the same sorts of habitat. If you are seeking them out so you can destroy their underground nests, then don't just guess. The best places to look are under old logs, piled up firewood and rotting tree stumps. Lift these up and then dig down a little. You will probably find a termite nest located in one such location about 50 cm beneath the surface, especially if there is a source of water within a few metres. Bear in mind the subterranean termites frequently build interconnected nests, so block off any tunnels you see and keep your eye open for further termite activity down the line.
Create Termite Barriers
Destroying the nests of termites will kill them in large numbers but it might not exterminate an entire established colony. Another good step you should also take is to protect your home from any damage that these insects might cause. Apply a termite barrier around your home, which should keep them at bay and kill off any that try to make their way across it. You can think of this as an invisible yet lethal termite fence. In fact, such barriers are applied with a liquid application. All you need to do is to dig a shallow trench around the perimeter of your property and spray a solution of the poison into it. Slow acting ones are most effective because termites will often cross the barrier and then go on to poison others in their colony before dying.
Make Use of Nematodes
Unlike most liquid termite barriers, using nematodes is natural and involves no chemicals. These are tiny worms that feed on insects like termites. You can buy these creatures commercially and often all you need to do to wake them up is to add water. Several million can be deployed at once. So long as they are placed in the vicinity of a termite colony, they should start munching their way through them within days. Of course, nematodes are only suited to external termite extermination.
