How To Tell If You Have Termites This Summer

Posted on: 14 December 2021

Termites are an exceptionally annoying pest that can be very hard to spot, especially during the summer when your mind is on so many other things around the house. You're probably preoccupied with how hot it is, whether the air conditioning is working and if you have enough room for all your guests at Christmas. However, even during this merry period, it is important that you make sure your home is not being infested with termites. Here are a few signs that you should call for a termite treatment from a pest control company.

Warping Windows

In general, windows have quite soft wooden frames which make them attractive food for termites. You might assume the main problem there would be that the termites eat away too much of the window frame and leave you barely any left to operate with, but the real truth is far more insidious. Termites burrow out the middle of the wood, not often coming to the surface, but this interior wood has a lot of moisture. Once the wood dries out because the moisture has been taken away, it can harden and change shape. This, then, will make it hard to open and close your windows. As such, if this is happening to you and you can't see a reason why, always have your property inspected for termites.

Check The Crawl Space

Many Australian households have a crawl space underneath their property, which is a small area where the foundations meet the ground. Often, this is the main entry for termites into your house. Crawl spaces are where some of them will be likely to hang out, rather than upstairs out in the open with you. You may even see more visible damage from termites in these colder, damp spaces. Make sure to bring a flashlight with you and watch your head.

Flying Insects

Termites are not just land-based. Indeed, many species can fly and will act sort of similar to moths at night, looking for light and hanging around it. If you notice an uptick in the number of flying insects then you should be on high alert, as that could be the presence of a new hive of termites. Termite treatment services can always organise a little inspection beforehand to ensure you do have termites, which is often the wisest thing you can do even if you aren't completely sure that you do have an issue.
